Michigan Religious & Philosophical Exemption Guide

Michigan Religious & Philosophical Exemption Guide

The Big Picture

Michigan forces parents through a state-run ritual before they’ll hand you the waiver. Here’s how to get through it without losing your ground — and why thousands of parents walk this path successfully every year.

💡 This guide was made possible thanks to Crew member Cathi, who shared her notes and experience with the Michigan exemption process.

Quick Path (Cheat-Sheet) ✅

  1. Call your county health department.
  2. Sit through their education session (virtual + in-person).
  3. Sign the official State of Michigan waiver form.
  4. Submit it to your child’s school.

That’s the process. Everything else is context.

Step-by-Step for Schools

  1. Contact your county health department
    1. Only they can issue the official waiver. Schools and doctors cannot.
  2. Complete the vaccine education session
    1. Virtual + in-person with staff. They’ll give their pitch. You don’t have to debate or justify.
  3. Sign the waiver
    1. Certified electronic (MCIR) or certified paper. No alterations allowed.
  4. Deliver the waiver
    1. Electronic waivers are shared directly.
    2. If paper, submit it to your school and keep a copy for your records.

When Waivers Are Needed

Religious vs. Philosophical

Both use the same process at the health department.

You’re Not Alone

Thousands of Michigan families successfully complete this waiver process every year. Schools see it constantly — it’s routine, even if they don’t want you to realize it.

Find a Vaccine-Choice Friendly Doctor in Michigan

Exemptions are one side of the fight. The other side is finding a doctor who respects your choices.

Tony puts it bluntly:

“Don’t walk back into a racket clinic — find a doc who’s on your side.”

Having a doctor who respects your decisions makes the whole process smoother — and gives you backup when the system tries to corner you.

Tony’s Take

“They want you thinking the health department owns the keys. They don’t. You do. The whole education session? It’s theater. You sit, you nod, you sign. That’s the price of the paper. But remember this — no doc, no bureaucrat, no clipboard in Lansing has power unless you hand it to them.”
